Molly Buford on Global-Scale Events, Creative Leadership & Designing for Impact

Partner Molly Buford with Markham co-founder Greg Hale

"I love that we get to make people feel seen, supported, and celebrated, and that our work always has a purpose."

As a Partner at Markham, Molly Buford leads some of the firm’s most high-stakes and high-impact productions, from global summits abroad to campaign trail moments here in the U.S. Her approach is grounded in empathy, strategy, and intention: designing experiences that move people, while honoring every detail that shapes how they feel.

Known for her deep empathy, thoughtful direction, and visual storytelling instincts, Molly has helped define Markham’s signature look and feel without ever letting aesthetics outweigh intention. Her experience across creative strategy, global development, and international affairs gives her work a rare blend of elegance and strategic clarity.

Designing for Emotion, Grounded in Strategy

Before Markham, Molly worked at the intersection of creative communications and politics, and policy. That early experience helped her understand that design isn't just about beauty. It's about clarity, resonance, and human connection.

"For me, great design starts with empathy. With imagining what someone needs to feel in a space in order to be open, inspired, or motivated. That’s where the creative direction begins." That mindset has helped Molly lead production for campaigns and nonprofit brands that span politics, culture, and public service.

She’s also played a key role in producing large-scale international conferences: managing everything from multi-language branding rollouts to culturally sensitive design decisions and complex venue logistics across the globe.

"Our best work comes when we can connect intention with experience. Why are we gathering? What should people walk away feeling? That’s the core of great production."

To Molly, space is never neutral. Every design decision from color to layout plays a role in the emotional and narrative arc of an event. Her work often begins with storyboarding key moments and building out the creative tone from there.

Building Trust, Holding Space

Molly is known for being a calming, precise, and intuitive force, especially in high-pressure environments. Internally, she’s a go-to partner for navigating high-stress challenges and emotionally complex moments, often working on events that are deeply personal, political, or historically significant.

"A huge part of our job is holding space for people, especially when the stakes are high or the message is vulnerable. Clients are trusting us not just with their logistics, but with their story."

That sense of care is paired with a clear creative vision and production fluency. From first moodboard to final load-out, Molly brings consistency, structure, and compassion to every step. “If we’ve done our job well, people don’t notice the production. They just feel held. But that invisible structure is everything.”

Leading with Purpose

Molly has led in some of the most high-pressure environments, where stakes are high, timelines are tight, and impact matters. At the core of Molly’s work are three constants: people, high stakes, and discretion. These values shape the way she leads.

Her leadership style is defined by calm under pressure, clarity in decision-making, and a quiet confidence that keeps teams steady, even when timelines are tight or emotions run high. She prioritizes collaborative planning, quick decision-making, and creative flexibility. These are the traits she believes are essential when navigating the moving pieces of live events with VIPs or multiple stakeholders involved. Discretion and trust, she adds, are non-negotiable.

“Details, details, details. Careful and thorough planning, patience, and flexibility. That’s what it takes to deliver consistently strong outcomes.”

Strategy with Sensitivity

When designing global conferences, Molly starts with people: their context, their experience, and their journey. “Doing something in Rwanda or the EU or Asia will all be different,” she explains. “You have to understand how people will travel to the event, what will be customary for them, and how that should shape the overall experience.”

For her, great strategy isn’t just about scale; it’s about sensitivity. From cultural nuance to logistical access, she weaves care and foresight into every decision, ensuring each event feels intentional, inclusive, and globally aware.

Fostering Culture and Collaboration

As a partner, Molly is equally focused on internal culture. She actively supports creative team development, strengthens cross-functional collaboration, and helps shape how Markham works across roles and departments, especially between creative and operations.

She’s also passionate about creating space for women in production. "There’s still so much room for growth in how our industry values and supports women, especially in leadership, creative direction, and technical production roles. It’s one of the things I care most about growing here."

Molly is drawn to moments where purpose and creativity intersect, where the story is strong, the stakes are meaningful, and the client trusts the process. "I love when the mission is clear, the client trusts us, and we get to build something that feels alive. That’s the magic.”
